DESCRIPTION: The Sportsplex at Metuchen is owned and managed by the Sportsplex affiliated real estate entity of The Maven Group. The Maven Group’s affiliate, Recycland, LLC, purchased this 19-acre property in 1998. Since then, Recycland has worked closely with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to remediate the property, which had been used in the manufacture of asbestos-containing products. The $8,500,000 cost included demolition of 194,500 of obsolete manufacturing operations, asbestos abatement, VOC/TPHC remediation of soils and ground water and ground water monitoring. As part of the comprehensive redevelopment plan, an existing distribution facility was sold to a private firm and local jurisdictions acquired two separate parcels for recreational uses. An outparcel was ground leased to a bank in 2003 and a 70,000 sf indoor recreation center opened in the fall of 2010, featuring adult and youth soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, basketball, roller hockey and volleyball. The balance of the site is planned for urban mixed use redevelopment to augment Metuchen’s Main Street revitalization.
